Making the decision to go clean, stay sober, entering into a rehab facility and sticking with the program till the end is not a small feat. Despite achieving that, your journey to recovery does not end with getting out of rehab. In fact, getting out of rehab is just the beginning of long term recovery with the first year being a critical time in the overall process.

Coming out of rehab is different if you are returning to the same environment you left behind. How does this new you cope with the environment? What steps can you take to increase your chances of staying sober and moving on with your life? Here are five things you can do that will help you in life after rehab:

Continuing Care

Before leaving rehab, your program will and should have designed a treatment plan for you to follow outside of rehab. The treatment could be in the form of sessions with a counsellor or psychologist. It is important that you understand that addiction which is a chronic illness, needs continued treatment. You should ensure that you are following the treatment plan that has been prescribed for you. Do not neglect it even if you are feeling strong in your sobriety.

Joining Support Groups

It is always a good idea to join a support group when you leave rehab. Build for yourself a community that you can connect with and that can help you on the journey to recovery. You need to look for and connect with people who share your experiences and are recovery as well. Whether it is a 12-step program or some other form of support group, having people to whom you can turn to at the times you need them the most, is really important and can sometimes be the only standing between you and a relapse.

Daily Structure

In rehab, following a schedule plays a big part in stabilising the life of a person struggling with addiction. Upon leaving rehab, having your days planned out and structured helps to retain this stability. You should have a routine that you follow daily and should not include just activities, work and meetings but things like nap, grooming and family time as well.

Create A Safe Home

Upon going home from rehab, you need to ensure that your home will be a safe place for you without any triggers that can cause a relapse. If you live alone, clean your home of the relics of your time of dependence and compulsive behaviour. If you think you would need help during this time, you should invite a friend or family member to come live with you. If you do not live alone, it is best that you have a talk with those you live with on how best they can help you- by keeping your home free of anything that can be a trigger and encouraging you as you progress in recovery.

Help Other People

When we help other people, we help ourselves and we draw strength from knowing that we are bringing value to our community and others around us. Helping other people helps you to see beyond yourself and your problems and this is vital to your development and recovery. You cannot give what you do not have. If you can be a source of strength for someone else, then there is surely more of that strength within you that you can draw on.
