The process of recovering from alcohol addiction is a long one that involves handling both the physical and psychological effects of alcohol withdrawal. Approaches To Alcohol Treatment

Alcohol treatment can be done in three main ways. Each of these have its advantages and downsides but when properly utilized, the treatment will work.

  1. Residential rehabilitation: This is usually seen to be the most effective approach. It involves getting admitted to a rehabilitation facility for a period of time where you will receive around the clock support from various experts. The main advantage of this method is that it takes you away from an environment where you are under pressure. It also helps to isolate you from the factors that trigger your drinking. The downside is the loss of complete freedom for a given period.
  2. Day therapy: In this method, you can still continue to live at home but you’ll be required to attend regular meetings at a healthcare facility. These sessions can be held from three to five days every week and each session can run for around 4-6 hours. During this time you are monitored and counselled. This approach works well with people who need to be monitored but live in a stable environment. It also allows people who work or attend school to be able to continue with certain aspects of their normal lives.
  3. Outpatient therapy: In outpatient therapy, you will not spend so much time at the rehabilitation facility although you’ll still have a few sessions there during the week. This method allows you to continue with your regular life. The downside is that you will have greater access to alcohol. You will also have less support during the recovery period and you may still be exposed to many of the triggers that lead you to drink. The life outside of rehab is also filled with many distractions and this may make it hard for you to focus on giving up alcohol.

Stages Of Alcohol Treatment

When you give up alcohol, the stages you will go through are:

  • Detoxification: This is the period during which you will experience the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. This is usually best done under medical supervision. Sometimes, medication may be provided to deal with severe withdrawal symptoms.
  • Abstinence: This is a program or plan that is designed to help you abstain from taking alcohol after the detoxification.
  • Recovery maintenance: Staying clean is a lifelong process. This is a way of helping you to address the issues that led you to drink in the first place and to find fulfilment away from alcohol. This stage of the process is more psychological than physical. It should still be taken seriously to avoid relapsing.
