Safer sex

Article_imageSafer sex means making sure you don't catch a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Your best protection is to use a condom. Not just sometimes, but every time you have sex.

You might think you don't need to bother with contraception, especially if your boyfriend or girlfriend has promised you that they don't sleep around. But people don't always tell the truth — and even if they stay faithful to you, if they had sex with anyone before you, you're still at risk.

If your partner slept with even just two other people before they slept with you, and they both slept with two people, who each slept with two people… can you tell where this is going? As far as the risk of infection goes, you're sleeping with about fifteen different people every time you have unprotected sex with your partner.

And because some infections don't have obvious symptoms (some have no symptoms at all) you can never know for sure if the person you are sleeping with has an STI. The best protection against STIs is to use a condom every time you have sex. It won't spoil your fun and it could save your life.
